“I knew I would be pumping when I went back to work, but ended up needing to pump way before that, as my little one had  a really hard time nursing at first.  This product is GREAT!  It fits directly onto my Medela Pump-in-Style and the bottles are BPA-free and thin enough that the milk warms quickly in them…you can feed straight from the bottle, which is really nice…I recommend this to any breastfeeding mother who thinks they might want to pump.  FANTASTIC product!”

First, make sure you are using the oldest milk first.  (The proprietary Mother’s Milk Mate First In-First Out ™ Breast Milk Storage Rack ensures this – the first bottle you pump is the first to roll off the rack to feed baby.)

Frozen breast milk can be thawed in the refrigerator, under warm running water from the faucet or in a bowl of warm water.  You can also thaw it at room temperature on a counter or other clean surface.  Thawed milk can be refrigerated for 24 hours, but never re-frozen.

To warm breast milk, run lukewarm tap water over the bottle of milk or place it in a bowl or pan of warm (not hot) water.  Do not thaw or warm breast milk in a pan on the stove or in the microwave!  Do not boil the breast milk.  High heating (over 100 degrees Farenheit) can destroy nutrients and protective properties in the milk.  In addition, microwaving creates hot spots that could burn your baby.

Before feeding the breast milk, gently swirl the bottle to ensure an even temperature and to mix the layers.  It is common for breast milk to separate during storage.  Shaking the milk is not recommended – this can cause a breakdown of some of the milk’s valuable components.

Always test the temperature of the milk on the inside of your wrist before feeding it to your baby.  The breast milk should feel comfortably warm, not hot.
Use the breast milk within 24 hours and never re-freeze it.  Because bacteria from your baby’s mouth can get into the milk, NEVER store and re-use a bottle of breast milk once your baby has been fed from that bottle.  The bacteria can multiply and then make your baby sick.  Throw away previously frozen milk that is not used within 24 hours..
